According to 3news.com Ismail Sherif, renowned as Black Sherif, continues to captivate not only through his music but also with his bold and captivating fashion choices.

During his debut performance in Gambia on November 25th, the VGMA Artiste of The Year wowed the audience not only with his music but also with a costume that diverged from his usual style, stirring a conversation across social media platforms.

While some of Black Sherif's Ghanaian fans raised eyebrows at his attire resembling female clothing, the Gambian audience appreciated his deep respect for their cultural heritage.

Sherif's outfit was an intentional homage to the Kankurang, a symbol entrenched in the cultural fabric of Mandinka communities in Senegal and The Gambia. Its reddish fiber-like appearance drew inspiration from this revered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Kankurang represents protection and order, often embodying supernatural powers, and is commonly portrayed by a young man after an initiation period. Its presence at ceremonies and festivals serves as a means to impart cultural knowledge to younger generations.

Notably, Black Sherif isn't the first to draw inspiration from Gambian culture. The Kankurang has influenced contemporary fashion, with designers infusing elements of its mask and attire into their creations, ranging from masks resembling the Kankurang's to garments using red fiber and leaves reminiscent of its costume.

As anticipation builds for his headline concert, "Zaama Disco" in Ghana, fans eagerly await Black Sherif's upcoming stage appearances, anticipating not only his musical prowess but also his unique and culturally resonant fashion statements.
