THE BOOK LAUNCH OF THE ANTHOLOGY TITLED AFAJATO



























 



The launch event of the latest anthology titled 'AFAJATO: Stories from Around the Volta Lake,' held on Thursday, 28th March 2024, at the B&PD Centre, African University College of Communications (AUCC) in Adabraka, Accra, by The Ama Atta Aidoo Centre For Creative Writing (AAACCW). The anthology, curated by Nana Sandy Achampong, director of the AAACCW, features short stories from 15 authors, predominantly beginners, exploring narratives from the Volta region of Ghana, including Alberta Morty, Akorfa Dawson, Ursula M. Abanga, Aisha Nelson, Ruth Aryeh, Patience Millennium Hlorlewu, Benjamin Cyril Arthur, Ellen Diamond, Deborah Titus-Glover, Kristy Naa Adjeley Lomo, Serwa Gyedu-Nuako, Kwesi Woode, Jim Fara Awindor, Abaa Moses Apiah, and Kofi Dzogbewu, who are now part of the prestigious AAACCW.

The launch event included a welcome address by AUCC President Prof. Abeku Blankson. During the launch of Afajato: Stories from around the Volta Lake, the Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong, highlighted the importance of regional anthologies in showcasing diverse narratives and building stronger communities through the power of storytelling. These anthologies like Afajato provide a platform for often overlooked voices, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in communities by celebrating their unique cultural heritage.

The authors of the Afajato anthology were Jim Fara Awindor, Kristy Naa Adjeley Lomo, Abaa Moses Apiah, Ruth Aryeh, and Alberta Morty. The official launch of "AFAJATO: Stories From Around the Volta Lake" was elegantly overseen by Naa Kokor Aadzieoyi I, the Queen mother of Adabraka Otuapai, emphasizing the cultural importance of the anthology in representing the vibrant cultural heritage of the Volta region.


"I am delighted to be part of this significant event. It is essential for us to share our own stories to guide and preserve our prosperity. AFAJATO: Stories From Around the Volta Lake will not only be a representation but also a guide to understanding that region. To truly appreciate a community or a group, you must know their story and embrace their culture. I hereby declare the Afajato book officially launched," declared the Queen mother. With her support, the book made its debut in the literary world.


Each author was presented with certificates recognizing their contributions by Dr. Kemi WaleOlaitan, Acting Vice President of AUCC, along with specially designed tote bags containing copies of the anthology. Nana S. Achampong, Director of AAACCW, managed the book sales, allowing attendees the chance to acquire some of the center's anthologies.


Author Ursula M. Abanga was awarded her certification for her involvement in the Afajato anthology. To wrap up the event, Nana S. Achampong extended thanks to all attendees and praised the authors for their valuable contributions.
